Based on the enigmatic photographic work from Roger Ballen’s book Inferno, published in November 2025 by Postcart Edizioni and itself inspired by Dante Alighieri’s odyssey into the underworld, Wanderwelle transformed these haunting images into a slow-burning, hallucinatory journey.

But this isn’t your usual hell. Wanderwelle conjured a stony, desolate shadowland – a prequel to the Inferno, from an age before the poets dreamt of hell. In this embryonic underworld, Ballen’s spectres and phantoms carve out the first circles, where memory and despair begins to intertwine…

The Amsterdam based collective wrote, directed, animated, and scored the piece – breathing sound, motion, and narrative into Roger Ballen’s photographs. Inferno premiered at the Gallerie d’Italia in Turin.

What shadows stir beneath the surface of your mind?
