De Duizendpoot

.

A seismologist awakens on a seemingly uninhabited island somewhere in the Japanese Sea. He investigates mysterious tremors that disrupt his sleep, while battling his demons. Recollections of a pitch-black dog and subterranean pains forced him to leave his home and family behind. Like a centipede, an unanswered question of guilt crawls into the most battered caverns of his subconscious. This new, isolated existence makes reality and figments of his imagination fuse. What follows is a hallucinogenic hike in which the seismologist encounters his own consciousness, blood-red glows, animal incarnations and other inexplicable phenomena. Everything he witnesses seems to be directly connected to the torn world that he is so eager to escape. Or is it all just the fabrication of a man whose mental state is deteriorating with every step he takes?

Wanderwelle devised the scenario and used it as a foundation to develop a thumb-thick, detailed storyboard. Based on this, illustrator Floor van het Nederend hand-drew extensive illustrations in ink. Subsequently, Wanderwelle applied colour to the entire project.

In the fall of 2021, De duizendpoot (The Centipede) was published by Concertobooks, the publishing house of Concerto, an internationally renowned record shop located in Amsterdam. Concertobooks is responsible for the Dutch editions of, among others, Charles Burns, Robert Crumb and Chris Ware.

De duizendpoot is presented in a luxurious hardcover format with a linnen spine and full colour, high quality paper. The release was accompanied by a book tour, a film program at cult cinema Lab111 and merchandise collaborations with (inter)nationally acclaimed clothing brands OBEY and Bonne Suits.
